How It Works

On Location: A Spotlight on Your Community was designed to help your students to tell the story of the arts in their community though a three-five minute documentary to be shared with the rest of the world via this Web site.

Throughout the project, teachers, students, and On Location media teaching artists will work together to create a short documentary focused on telling the story of an artist or arts group from their community.

Here's how it works:

  • Ten schools from around the country will be selected to participate in this program through an application process.
  • Upon selection, the school will be scheduled for a visit from the studio bus, which will spend three weeks "on location" at your school.
  • In the weeks preceeding the visit, the school will work electronically with the Kennedy Center to prepare for the visit by conducting the initial research on the documentary's subject.
  • Then the bus arrives. Over the next three weeks, two media artists will work with one class (grades 6-8) in storytelling techniques, multimedia creation and filmmaking skills.
  • The finished video will be uploaded to the On Location Web site, part of the Kennedy Center's ARTSEDGE network, to be shared around the world.
For now, download the application, or learn more about How to Apply.
